You and a partner are going to investigate the problems and issues facing Americans in the 21st century which for many of you, you either have not encountered these issues yet, or you have or someone you know has already faced these issues. You should summarize what the issue is in a paragraph, and then offer solutions to this problem. Make sure you explain your solutions in a paragraph. Privacy vs. Safety #2

Investigate the Patriot Act. Using Google, find out what is the Patriot Act. Then, after you summarize it, what are all the specific requirements and rules it spells out, and what does it give to Law Enforcement? Finally, answer what would be so controversial about this legislation? Explain this all on a sheet of paper. Due at the end of the bell. Be prepared to discuss towards the end.

Privacy vs Safety

You and a partner are members of a town council charged with deciding if all, some, or none of the items listed below should be purchased by the council. All of these have been recommended by the Police Department and FBI as ALL necessary for purchase by every town council in your area. Research what these all are, and come up with a report recommending or not recommending the purchase of these items. Include reasons 1. What these are and what they do 2. why each of these things should or should not be purchased. Base each of your opinions on the idea of whether your privacy is being violated or not.

Facebook

We have been having lots of discussions lately about whether or not certain things or actions are invasions of your privacy. One of the things the mainstream media is just starting to pick up on is the idea that Facebook may be an invasion of your privacy. 60 Minutes just ran a story covering the CEO of Facebook, as well as the company and its aspirations and current revamps of its software, and whether or not it is an invasion of YOUR Privacy. Today, we will be watching and discussing this segment of that program. If you are absent today, make sure you check the CBS News link to the right of this post, watch it, and comment on Facebook and your Privacy to be turned in using a 3 paragraph response.

Privacy and ID Theft

You are to research how ID theft occurs. You are also to research how to protect yourself from ID Theft. As always, start with a simple Google search. Then, compile your information on a digital Word File. 3 examples for each part.

Privacy and Schools

You will be looking at the issues surrounding schools and Privacy. As with most school law, many changes have occurred because of Supreme Court Case decisions. You and a partner will be researching how the courts have changed school policies regarding privacy. You will:
1. Research the following Supreme Court Cases:
a. Brown vs. Board of Educ.
b. New Jersey vs. TLO
c. Tinker vs. DesMoines
d. Board of Educ. of Pottawatomie vs. Earls
After you have found these cases, summarize them- tell me what the issue was, what the decision was, and finally, a short paragraph describing how this case relates to Privacy
2. All of these should be placed on a sheet of paper in an orderly fashion, try to dress it up and make it look pretty.
3. How do these cases apply to you at Northwest today? See #2 for directions.

Privacy around the World

1. With a partner next to you, besides you, or in front or back of you, read about the UN's Declaration of Human Rights, in particular, pay close attention to article 12. You can access it here: http://www.un.org/en/documents/udhr/
2. Choose 3 of the below countries, and describe for me their Policies towards their peoples Privacy. I would start with a simple Google search, and go from there.
a. Zimbabwe
b. Peoples Republic of China
c. North Korea
d. Cuba

f. Afghanistan (before US Invasion)
3. Compile your information in a simple word document and email it to Mr. Flickinger. Be prepared to share your information with the class, you may be called upon to share today!

Privacy Background #2

US Constitution

There is no place in our Constitution that says or mentions the word Privacy. However, don't forget that the Courts in our country are supposed to take the older words in the Constitution and apply them to modern day situations.
Imagine you are a Supreme Court justice who is concerned about protecting the Privacy of modern citizens. Examine the amendments of the constitution and on a sheet of paper, list the wording of the amendment, and why you think this applies to Privacy. The last thing you are to do, is to write your own amendment that actually protects privacy. Make sure your wording is explicit, yet broad enough to be able to change with time, and technology!

Privacy #1

1. You and a partner will create a poster with your collaboratively defined explanation of what Privacy is. The word Privacy will be in the center of the page, and words, pictures, and sayings will surround it.
2. On a 2nd sheet of paper, and using the internet for a guide, explain how privacy affects your lives. Use the same instructions as above in #1.
3. Create a survey of 10 questions in which the recipients would answer questions about privacy in their lives and how it affects them. You can use a scale of 1-5, or 1-10, with the low number being not at all, and the high number being extremely.

Ohio School Funding

Ohio's school funding system is still fundamentally based on property taxes, voted on by the constituents in each school district. The state has made some changes, but it has ended up taking from the larger districts like ours, and started giving more to poorer districts. You job today, is to try and make sense of all this mess:
1. Read this article from the Columbus Dispatch. Create a chart listing the basics of school funding on a separate sheet of paper.
2. Read and analyze the portion of the school funding brief from Bowling Green State University near Toledo that covers the Governors Plan to fix the funding system in Ohio. It is located here, and make sure you give it enough time to load because it is a PDF file. The part you need is on page 3 of 5. You will first list the major parts of the governors plan. Then, list your own recommendations, all done on a separate sheet of paper.

Please do the following activities:
1. Complete a newsreel sheet using the CBS news, located at www.cbsnews.com
2. Using the website http://www2.ed.gov/programs/racetothetop/index.html, review with your partner the race to the top program and make suggestions, with a paragraph explanation why it should reformed or changed in some way. You should identify at least 5 reforms that could be changed in some way.
3. Using the above website from the Department of Education, and the White House Page on the Race to the Top located Here: http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/fact-sheet-race-top with your partner compare and contrast the two pages. How are they different and how are they the same?

Both of these should be turned into the sub at the conclusion of the bell.

These should not be a 15 minute activity. It should take at least 30 minutes each for activities 2 and 3. You should not have any spare time in class.

List the issues the case deals with 3. List the pros and cons of the cases, at least 5 each 4. Write what the decision is

Public School Funding

DeRolph v. Ohio Department of Educ.

You and your new partner will be researching the historic DeRolph Case for Ohio. You will do the following:
1. Explain the background of the case. Why was it started, what prompted the publicity it received, how long did it take before it made it to the Supreme Court of Ohio.
2. What was the decision? How did it impact the Public School systems in Ohio?
3. How many times was it appealed, reaffirmed, and or reversed? What was the reasoning behind these decisions? How has the State of Ohio responded to these decisions?
4. How has the funding system in Ohio changed as a result of these decisions? If it has not changed, what are the reasons given for this?

You and your partner will choose 2 of the 4 to research- in other words, one partner will do two, while the other partner does the other two. Record your responses on a separate sheet of paper.

Censorship and Violence

Research the history of censorship of TV shows, radio programs, and the movies & video games with regard to how and why they were censored. In a powerpoint, you will:
1. Describe the background
2. Why it was censored
3. What was the end result for the show
4. Have one of each from the categories above

Censorship and being famous

Investigate the lives of Lenny Bruce, George Carlin, and Howard Stern. Find out how their activities influenced the degree of censorship in the media and with being a celebrity. Put your findings into a powerpoint with the following sections:
1. Background
2. Activities
3. How they were censored
4. What was done to fight the censorship or how they worked around it

Make sure you include pictures, quotes (if there are any school appropriate ones!!!), and anything necessary to prove your point.(school appropriate of course!)

Censorship on the Net

Censorship on the net is a big thing in todays world. You have two scenarios to create posters for. Scenario #1: The Feds want to create a law that that would enable federal agents to break into private businesses and homes in order to get passwords and other information regarding subversive behavior towards the government.
Scenario #2: A proposed law would put even stricter filters in Public Schools that would block everything but "school concerning" sites.

You and your partner should create a poster and a letter to the editor for each either supporting or opposing these "proposed" laws.

Public vs Private Censorship Rights

Research the Similarities and Differences in the rights of students who attend public schools versus those who attend private schools and colleges. Make sure to utilize your good friend Google, as well as log onto the Ohio Department of Educations website, located here. You should find 5 similarities and 5 differences, lay them out on a blank sheet of copy paper, and then compare those rights to the decision handed down in the Bethel Schools No. 403 vs Fraser Supreme Court Case.

Censorship in Schools

We all know from Mr. Vanover coming in and speaking that you do not have the same rights in school as in out. Many of these rights we have discussed as a class and have debated them at length. We will be preparing to offer arguments both for and against two important court cases involving school censorship.
1. Summarize the following cases: Tinker vs DeMoines, and Hazelwood vs Kuhlmeier. Include a brief background summary(what happened to bring the case), the Supreme Courts Decision, and the after affects fro the decision.
2. After your summaries, please have a one-two paragraph agreeing and dissenting opinion written about each case. Remember, you are both agreeing with and bashing the decision in each of your paragraphs! Remember to back your opinions with facts from the case, as well as facts from any law you can find on the internet.
3. Be prepared to share your opinions with the class!

Censorship and Books

You and your partner are charged with deciding which books you will ban, and which books you will not, based on the list of the 50 most frequently banned books list. Please tell: 1. Why it should be banned from your library 2. Why you think it was banned elsewhere 3. If you are keeping it, tell why it is being kept. 4. Use your netbooks to research these books to give details in your report about why these should be banned or not.

Censorship in the News

Censorship is practiced by the major news corporations through the use of their selection of "hard" and "soft" news stories to cover. You are to access the major websites of ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX and list the top 5 major stories. Compare these stories, and surmise why these stories are deemed more important than others. Then, choose 2 soft stories and explain why these stories would be covered, and others are not.

Censorship around the world

1. Read over article 19 in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on the United Nations Website. Then you and your partner should rewrite this article to reflect more of a modern idea of freedom of expression.
2. Access the State Departments website. Click on the policy tab, and from the dropdown menu click on the Democracy and Human Rights tab. Create a report listing the degree of censorship in other countries around the world. Research 10 countries from this report.

Today, after going over as a class the censorship situations sheet you and your partner worked on Monday, you and your partner will summarize the following court cases, and then explain in YOUR WORDS why you agree or disagree with the verdict in this case. Then state how this court case affects us today.

2. With a partner, (note partner, NOT groups of three, four or five or six!!!) read the facts about the Health Care bill which has passed the US Congress last night. Use the following webpage:

3. With your partner, and using a big sheet of butcher paper from the front of the room, create a pros and cons of the Health Care Bill poster. You should list 10 pros, and 10 cons. With every one, list your reason for it being a pro or con. Can be 2-3 sentences. This should take more than 10-15 minutes. You should spend at least 45 minutes on this activity. Any less time and you ARE NOT SPENDING ENOUGH TIME ON EACH PRO AND CON!!! Be prepared to discuss your reasoning for the pros and cons in class on Tuesday.

Return the Netbooks to the cart and make sure you plug them in and make sure the lights are facing outwards!!!
