Censorship and Books

You and your partner are charged with deciding which books you will ban, and which books you will not, based on the list of the 50 most frequently banned books list. Please tell: 1. Why it should be banned from your library 2. Why you think it was banned elsewhere 3. If you are keeping it, tell why it is being kept. 4. Use your netbooks to research these books to give details in your report about why these should be banned or not.

Censorship in the News

Censorship is practiced by the major news corporations through the use of their selection of "hard" and "soft" news stories to cover. You are to access the major websites of ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX and list the top 5 major stories. Compare these stories, and surmise why these stories are deemed more important than others. Then, choose 2 soft stories and explain why these stories would be covered, and others are not.

Censorship around the world

1. Read over article 19 in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on the United Nations Website. Then you and your partner should rewrite this article to reflect more of a modern idea of freedom of expression.
2. Access the State Departments website. Click on the policy tab, and from the dropdown menu click on the Democracy and Human Rights tab. Create a report listing the degree of censorship in other countries around the world. Research 10 countries from this report.

History of Censorship

Today, after going over as a class the censorship situations sheet you and your partner worked on Monday, you and your partner will summarize the following court cases, and then explain in YOUR WORDS why you agree or disagree with the verdict in this case. Then state how this court case affects us today.

The following five court cases will be researched by you and your partner:

What is Censorship???

You and your newly assigned partner are going to do some very interesting brainstorming on our new topic for the next couple of weeks, Censorship.
1. You and your new partner will work on a definition of Censorship. Each of you should look at your definition you came up with from your opening question, and come up with a good working definition.
2. Come up with 2 posters which both defend, and oppose censorship. Due by the end of class.
3. Begin "Is this Censorship" activity sheet.

Final Privacy Activity

You and a partner are going to investigate the problems and issues facing Americans in the 21st century which for many of you, you either have not encountered these issues yet, or you have or someone you know has already faced these issues. You should summarize what the issue is in a paragraph, and then offer solutions to this problem. Make sure you explain your solutions in a paragraph. Here are the 21st century problems in the Privacy field:
1. Encryption on the Internet
2. Public Records on the Internet
3. Privacy in your automobile
4. Megan's Law
5. Purchasing and using Spying Equipment
6. Privacy issues in the classroom
7. Exclusion from certain organizations like the Boy Scouts for unstated reasons

Privacy vs Safety #2

Investigate the Patriot Act. Using Google, find out what is the Patriot Act. Then, after you summarize it, what are all the specific requirements and rules it spells out, and what does it give to Law Enforcement? Finally, answer what would be so controversial about this legislation? Explain this all on a sheet of paper. Due at the end of the bell.

Privacy vs. Safety

You and a partner are members of a town council charged with deciding if all, some, or none of the items listed below should be purchased by the council. All of these have been recommended by the Police Department and FBI as ALL necessary for purchase by every town council in your area. Research what these all are, and come up with a report recommending or not recommending the purchase of these items. Include reasons why each of these things should or should not be purchased. Base each of your opinions on the idea of whether your privacy is being violated or not.

ID Theft

You are to research how ID theft occurs. You are also to research how to protect yourself from ID Theft. As always, start with a simple Google search. Then, compile your information on a poster. You and a partner. Due at end of block.

Privacy and Schools

You will be looking at the issues surrounding schools and Privacy. As with most school law, many changes have occurred because of Supreme Court Case decisions. You and a partner will be researching how the courts have changed school policies regarding privacy. You will:
1. Research the following Supreme Court Cases:
a. Brown vs. Board of Educ.
b. New Jersey vs. TLO
c. Tinker vs. DesMoines
d. Board of Educ. of Pottawatomie vs. Earls
After you have found these cases, summarize them- tell me what the issue was, what the decision was, and finally, a short paragraph describing how this case relates to Privacy
2. All of these should be placed on a sheet of paper in an orderly fashion, try to dress it up and make it look pretty.

Privacy Around the World

1. With a partner next to you, besides you, or in front or back of you, read about the UN's Declaration of Human Rights, in particular, pay close attention to article 12. You can access it here: http://www.un.org/en/documents/udhr/
2. Choose 3 of the below countries, and describe for me their Policies towards their peoples Privacy. I would start with a simple Google search, and go from there.
a. Zimbabwe
b. Peoples Republic of China
c. North Korea
d. Cuba
e. Iran
f. Afghanistan (before US Invasion)
3. Compile your information in a simple Powerpoint. Be prepared, I may call on your group to present, so that means everyone should be prepared to present their findings to the class!

Privacy #2

Full Text, US Constitution

There is no place in our Constitution that says or mentions the word Privacy. However, don't forget that the Courts in our country are supposed to take the older words in the Constitution and apply them to modern day situations.
Imagine you are a Supreme Court justice who is concerned about protecting the Privacy of modern citizens. Examine the amendments of the constitution and on a sheet of paper, list the wording of the amendment, and why you think this applies to Privacy. The last thing you are to do, is to write your own amendment that actually protects privacy. Make sure your wording is explicit, yet broad enough to be able to change with time, and technology!

Privacy Lesson #1

1. You and a partner will create a poster with your collaboratively defined explanation of what Privacy is. The word Privacy will be in the center of the page, and words, pictures, and sayings will surround it.
2. On a 2nd sheet of paper, and using the internet for a guide, explain how privacy affects your lives. Use the same instructions as above in #1.
3. Create a survey of 10 questions in which the recipients would answer questions about privacy in their lives and how it affects them. You can use a scale of 1-5, or 1-10, with the low number being not at all, and the high number being extremely.
